The French Touch this ain’t: RA’s Derek Miller celebrates the unconventional sounds of the Circus Company imprint, one of Paris’ finest labels.
For a city with as vibrant and eclectic a musical history as Paris, let’s be honest: it’s not the first—maybe ain’t even the twelfth—European city to spring to mind when you think of experimental electronic music. As such, it makes sense that one of the city’s foremost dance labels has a long-standing aesthetic affiliation with one of the city’s more central musical pastimes: Jazz. Circus Company, the Parisian imprint co-owned by Mathias Duchemin (AKA Sety) and Nicolas Sfintescu (half of deranged jazz house duo Nôze), has made no secret of its love for jazz and funk. Much of their output since they began in 2001 could fill the floors of brick-cellar Parisian jazz cafes as swiftly as any of its younger, night-draining dance clubs. The primary importance for the music that springs from the label seems to be club exotica, a kind of genre non-denominationalism. READ MORE
