In the past nine years Montreal-hailing Mike Shannon has gone from being hotly-tipped to being world-renowned, rapidly establishing himself as one of the most reliable and dancefloor-curdling techno DJ/producers in the galaxy.
His career began at the front-end of this century with the release of ‘Sunaj Assassins’ on his own Cynosure imprint. Cynosure is a by-word for quality experimental techno, releasing records by Shannon himself as well as the likes of Deadbeat, Mark Henning and Brett Johnson. Shannon has gone on to record for a number of other celebrated labels including Wagon Repair and Dumb-Unit. In 2002 he released his debut album on the legendary Force Inc; it was followed in 2006 by Possible Conclusions To Stories That Never End for Scape, and most recently came the excellent Memory Tree, recorded for Hawtin’s Plus8.
With a glitchy, swinging sound that proves there’s still plenty of life in minimal techno if it’s done right, Shannon is always an enthralling listening. His mix for FACT is essentially a “best of Cynosure”, featuring seven Shannon productions alongside tracks from Monoblock, SLG, Sieg Uber Die Sonner and more. It’s pretty fucking good.

Listen to Mike Shannon’s DJ set at the last CYNOSURE / WAGON REPAIR party during BerMuDa @ Watergate on Sept 18th.
Rewinding to MUTEK_10’s Friday night Nocturne, we venture into the intimate Savoy room of the Metropolis, where the Cynosure label was out celebrating its own 10th anniversary in full force. Those who were fortunate enough to cram their way in undoubtedly remember this as a night of relentless partying, sweat-on-the-walls dancing, and general minimal mayhem. Celebrating the label that helped propel his brand of techno to a larger audience, Ernesto brought his unique mix of Latin influences and Northern minimalism to a very appreciative crowd. Under the gun: The Mole
Deep disco delights, soulful house music and the voice from planet love: It’s what’s making the world go round for The Mole. We call up Berlin to dip into Colin de la Plante’s record bag.
In a recent interview with Electronic Beats, Colin de la Plante, AKA The Mole, was asked to pass comment on how he would describe his music: “Me? No…that’s not my job, that’s your job. I did the hard part—I made the fucking shit!” It’s perhaps not the most encouraging statement to digest prior to a 30 minute chat on the intricacies of the man’s currently favoured releases, but when we called up Berlin to converse with a somewhat groggy sounding de la Plante, the Canadian DJ/producer/Santa theologist seemed more than content to discuss other people’s music. Various artists “Snuggle & Slap” Compilation – OUT Oct 19th 2009
Celebrating 10 years of refining its highly personal vision of underground electronic dance music, Paris’ Circus Company presents Snuggle & Slap, a two-CD compilation balancing contemporary house music with more idiosyncratic submissions. It’s more than just a label sampler: many of the artists included here appear two or even three times, having been afforded the opportunity to think beyond the dancefloor and experiment with new sounds, unusual styles, and secret passions. Hushed funk, feathery beats and spongy textures characterize Snuggle, while Slap snaps to attention with more insistent grooves straight to the heart of the label’s sweet spot: sumptuously detailed, swoonworthily deep house. Whether you’ve been following Circus Company for the whole decade or are only just now turning on, this collection of new, exclusive material is an essential portrait of one of the most dynamic labels around. Who’s on board? There are veterans from the label’s very earliest days, including Ark, Nôze, Dave Aju and Sety. There are folks that have joined in recent years, enlarging the label’s sound along with its roster: dOP, MyMy, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, Audio Werner, Antislash, Oleg Poliakov, Le K. And finally there are the most recent freaks to join the Circus: Berlin resident Ryan Crosson, New York’s Wolf+Lamb-affiliated Nicolas Jaar, and the German jazz/soul band Homewreckers. There are also a few familiar faces hidden behind names that might be new to you: Ezechiel Pailhes, who contributes a touching sketch for piano and voice, is one half of Nôze; Destination Danger is the pairing of Oleg Poliakov and Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, and together they come up with one of the album’s most driving and hypnotic tracks.
