ERNESTO FERREYRA

LoMidHigh Oganic - Midnight Sun EP

lomidhigh-009.jpg

Right in the trails of the past months releases, Andreas Jornvils splendid OMG EP and the deep warm ethnic La Boca EP by Gonzales comes the proper stomping business from Ernesto Ferreyra.

The first cut has this irresistable good times feel and discolike flavour thrown in for good measure with those rumbling congas. Bakana is the name of the game here.
Taking you back to the mid 90’s cut up techniques of Cajual Records and exactly the track that someone like Derrick Carter would kill the floor with.

Flip over the record and you get the bonus bouncer of Ground which is a slow builder that has something like an Italo Disco synth in the distant deep space and all of a sudden explodes in cascades of soundwaves.

ADAM MARSHALL

New Kanada 17 (NK17) - “Vespers EP”

A1. Vespers
B1. Deep Knight Track
Vinyl release: June 12, 2009
Digital release: July 1, 2009

nk17_lbl.jpg

One of the things that RA’s recent Mutek oral history crystallized was the idea that Canadian artists in the late ’90s and early ’00s needed to leave their home country to truly flourish from a gigging standpoint. The argument could also be made, however, that the same is true for their production: Free to work in the studio for extended periods of time without a day job to worry about, these artists have finally found their own language to speak in, one that isn’t translated through Detroit, Chicago, Toronto or even Berlin, where many of them now reside.

After many years of living in the city, you get the sense that finally Adam Marshall—one of those Canadian ex-pats—is finally finding his own production language. Or that it’s finally resonating. Marshall has an EP out on Simple, an imprint that has nothing to do with the Canadian scene, as well as the sterling North at Night EP already to his name in 2009. And as good as those releases are, “Vespers” might be the best. Its chunky house beat is unremarkable, but the radio transmissions and synth programming are anything but. The sampled radio is used—unlike Akufen—underneath as coloring, appearing every so often for a moment to remind you of its existence, while the synths lay out a long, glowering phrase. The best part? When most everything cuts out aside from a voice telling us, “We’re getting to be toward the official peak.”

“Deep Knight Track” doesn’t match the heights of “Vespers,” but it’s still a solid track, taking a echoing synth stab as its raison d’être and going all Tony Lionni with it every so often. It’s a playful little tune, and one that can probably have great use as set builder, but I’m having trouble getting past “Vespers” most times that I break this out. I anticipate you will too.

MIKE SHANNON

Wagon Repair - “The Re-Nag EP”

artist:    Mike Shannon
title:       The Re-Nag EP
label:     Wagon Repair, CA. (Distributed by Word & Sound, DE.)

wag049-jacket-1200.jpg

Wagon Repair are excited to announce the latest EP from Berlin based Canadian Mike Shannon.

The Re-Nag EP, his third Wagon Repair release and first production of 2009, is the latest in a long line of releases from the head of Cynosure Records, with his work having previously graced imprints from ~Scape and Num to Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 Records.

Opener ‘Darkstar 3000′ is a futurist techno stomp. Engined by poked melodic tones and a prominent metallic hat, dissonant stealth melodies manoeuvre around percussion and punched bass. Biding time to prolong suspense, both bass and key melodic journeys coordinate to climax in a tightly executed sensory assault. ‘Sweets’ opens energetically with static percussive tones circling around a pummeling kick. A rapturous vocal takes lead, effervescing within a wind tunnel of wobbly bass melodies and dizzy pads to close. ‘Sweetapella’ is an abstract entity, with it’s sole vocal discernibly haunting in the absence of beats and structure. Full of texture and space, this is one for the producers that will surely not go to waste.

Simple 0939 - The Owls Won’t See Us EP

am_simple_label_1000px.jpg

Step forward Toronto, Canada native Adam Marshall. With nearly two decades experience as a DJ, not to mention his acclaimed work as a producer and label owner for New Kanada, Adam has amassed considerable respect from the electronic music community for his finely tuned blend of lysergic house grooves and smart, sharp techno. Now residing in Berlin, home to many of his Canadian peers, with recently acclaimed remixes for Seth Troxler, Radioslave’s Rekids label and with forthcoming releases on esteemed imprints including Cynosure, KUJI and of course his own New Kanada, and the reinvention of his live set to a more gear based setup, the move to Europe looks set to be a bright one.

The CYN Bookings team is proud to announce a new addition in its roster: the Circus Company’s co-founder and gifted DJ SETY

r1091293_1.JPG

Since the late ’90s, Sety (Mathias Duchemin) has been a fierce and tireless activist within Paris’ electronic underground scene, determined to carve out a space for unconventional, experimental dance music. In 1999 he co-founded the Circus Company label, along with fellow artists Kean and Freak, of Nôze; in 10 years, it has grown from a local outpost into an international hub. With a roster including Nôze, Ark, Dave Aju, dOP, Mossa, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts and DJ Koze, among many others, Circus Company has become one of Europe’s most respected modern house labels.

:: NEW ARTIST :: ARGENIS BRITO ::

We’re very proud to announce the new addition to the CYN Bookings’ roster: ARGENIS BRITO (Cadenza).

NEW RELEASES:

Cadenza 031 - Imminent EP

cadenza31.jpg

Venezuelan producer Argenis Brito graces us with his sophomore Cadenza release, the ‘Imminent EP’. Renowned for his role as lead vocalist for Senor Coconut as well as his collaborative projects with artists as decorated as Luciano, Pier Bucci, Jay Haze and Samim, the multi-talented Argenis’ solo work comes with some pedigree. Resident in Berlin since 2004, his distinctly latin interpretation of house is a step ahead of the game, with prior releases on Junion and Cadenza animating floors with that inimitable South American fervour.

Title track ‘Imminent’ is a playful affair, with bouncing bass and a shimmering synth melody dancing around the kick. Intoxicating and funked up, the melodies call and respond in a fragmented conversation while pulsing echoed tones add depth to the mix. A2 ‘Mind Body Soul’ stutters into a complex percussive pattern, coloured by warm keys and blocks of bass tone. Funky is the word, as a distorted vocal directs bodies to the floor. Deep and immersive, dark melodic synth movements plunge us into a sweaty and cathartic house hole. On the flip, ‘Lolipop’ combines electro and house elements into one cheeky dance with the devil. Bubbling bass flows under cascading melodic synth, as fat percussion crunches around sharp vocal bursts. Slick and futuristic, this is for that time of the night where looking backwards is not an option. Closing the EP, ‘Unreality’ is as deep as they come. Warm and uncompromising key stabs pulsate over a no-nonsense bass drive, accented by harmonising clav tones. Living up to it’s moniker, the resonant melodies and hypnotic pace conspire to transcendental effect.

Adam Marshall has recorded a new DJ mix for Paris-based blog, Get The Curse. Check it out here:
http://www.getthecurse.com/2009/03/23/adam-marshall-new-kanada-gtc057/

Alongside this bespoke mix, Adam has two much anticipated releases on the red carpet.

His new release on Cynosure, “North at Night”, is out March 23rd and has been welcomed by a wide-range of key tastemakers. Philip Sherbourne summed the release up well when he said, “Absolutely gorgeous.”.

In the pipeline, and on the way, is another new release on Will Saul’s Simple Records. “The Owl’s Won’t See Us” is delicate piece of  acid house, that grabs hold of the stereo pallet and plays with your head. Alongside the title track, is a B-side called “Tool For Early Chicago” that picks up somewhere between Relief and Trax…. with remix by Seth Troxler and Shaun Reeves. Out May 1st.

podcast-16-01.jpg

While their more southern neighbors in Detroit provided the basis for much of modern electronic music, there is no denying the impact that Canadian techno has had on the world. It has been a decade since Ontario native Mike Shannon launched Cynosure and Revolver Records with friend J. Hunsberger. The twin labels were set up to respectively explore the dance floor and more experimental climes of techno and house, and in the process helped to champion a range of like-minded countrymen. Shannon’s own productions explore the gamut of this ethos, whether it’s the cheeky twisted floor cuts of John Shananigans or the deeper moodier fare released under his own name through to his introspective left of field material that graced the Possible Conclusions To Stories That Never End album. For the latest LWE podcast Mike assembled an exclusive mix of forthcoming and never released tracks in the old fashioned, two turntables and a mixer way he describes as “a little raw (no effects or edits), just the way I like it…” Help celebrate the tenth anniversary of one of Canada’s vanguard techno labels by peering into this sonic crystal ball of up and coming Cynosure exclusives.

ERNESTO FERREYRA

Cadenza 33 - Siluetas EP (Out April 9th 2009)

unknown.png

With its thirty-third release, Cadenza grows its family once again, bringing on board rising talent Ernesto Ferreyra. Born and raised in Cordoba, Argentina, and until recently based in Montreal, where he came up amidst the MUTEK festival’s extended family, Ernesto calls Berlin home today. His ability to synthesize new ideas from diverse surroundings has made itself amply heard on his releases for Mutek_Rec, Cynosure and Thema, along with remixes for Adam Marshall (New Kanada) and Monofax (Lomidhigh). Recently, you’re as likely to find Ernesto alongside Guillaume Coutu-Dumont in the duo Chic Miniature, renowned for their spontaneous, energetic live sets as well as releases on Raum…Musik, Musiqe Risquée and Crosstown Rebels. So Cadenza was lucky to get some time alone with the young multitasker, who continues to refine his style across four impressive and infectious tracks for the label.

Across all four cuts (two on vinyl, and two digital-only), Ernesto shows off his uniquely grooving, percussive style. In a former life, he might have marched in a samba school: shakers and noisemakers fall in a steady stream over carefully tuned percussion of every shape, size and caliber; with his slippery rhythms and swerving syncopations, you’re left with the impression of a parade of drummers from around the world, marching in lockstep down Berlin’s slick cobblestones.

“Hunted,” the most upfront of the four tracks, lays out a rollicking groove punctuated by hiccupping toms; choppy vocal samples serve as invocations to move, while rushing waves of reverb flesh out the tune’s ample dimensions. A simple repeated chord provides the final one-two punch. Perfect for any hour, this promises to illuminate any set like a Brazilian sunrise.

“Caleza” finds Ernesto digging even deeper into his bag of tricks. Crafty polyrhythms merge into a snaky cadence that keeps evolving at every step; midway through, mallet-like tones break out into a triumphant and surprising melodic lead. With its lush wooden tones, this is an anthem in tribute to anyone that’s ever shaped anything with their bare hands.

ADAM MARSHALL

NK15 - “Two Excercises In Pain” - Adam Marshall / Mood Edit / Murr (Out Now!!)

nk15.jpg

Release Date: (vinyl-only) Monday, March 9th.

“New Kanada enters the year of darkness with two cuts of techno that go straight for the throat. Raw house music for mixers, jackers, and people of ill repute everywhere.

Side A features a slamming Murr remix of “Stay,” track by Adam Marshall. Murr’s original Moog bassline gets jacked into a DJ-friendly mix weapon of the highest calibre. 10+ minutes of erratic hats, swung snares and some weird noises that would do Octave One proud.

Sibe B is a homage to our favourite analog mixer of days gone by - the Numark DM1950. Mood Edit embraces the chaos of Chicago house, and the class of New York City in this long playing dub tool that will be sure to evoke fear in the legs - and passion somewhere inbetween. Complete with off kilter bassline, counterpoint bump, and a long deep mix for the heads. ”

Chica Paula and Sonja Moonear’s new remixes on Kalk Pets

kalkpets17_a.jpg

ARTIST. MALUCO
TITLE. RIGHT TIME? THE REMIXES
FORMAT. 12″

TRACKLIST

A-SIDE
EVANDRO. SONJA MOONEAR’S SOUL FRICTION MIX

B-SIDE
SAM. DINKY’S SAM REMIX
RIGHT TIME. CHICA PAULA’S “LA DEL BARRIO MIX”

Max Loderbauer, Pier Bucci and Argenis Brito most recently presented us with their sun-drenched acoustic showers under the name of Maluco on Karaoke Kalk in 2008.  For spring 2009 the trio’s south-american sounds have now been remodelled into brandnew electronic dance mixes by three very diligent, and indeed very striking ladies.

First up is the almost 10 minutes-long Soul-Friction Remix of ”Evandro” by Sonja Moonear. Native of Switzerland she is in great demand as a DJane as well as a prudent producer of monumental techno music. She is also one creative half of the electronic live-duo Junction SM who call the label Kalk Pets their home and have released their debut back in August 2006 (Kalk Pets 6).

Dinky aka DJ Dinky is reviving the fresh sound of “Sam”. The native Chilean is a true globetrotter, currently living in Berlin, where she runs her own label Horizontal. Her most recent longplayer “May Be Later” has been released on Vakant in autumn 2008 and is utterly beautiful, like the soundtrack of some sublime travel documentary. An exotic adventure in the midst of a big city.

Last but not least Chica Paula is delighting us with her “La Del Barrio” version of “Right Time”, testing the mind with such a relaxed sound that there’s just no time for moping about. The Maluco-rush isn’t at all a new arena for the chilean musician: Together with Max Loderbauer she is known as Chica and the Folder, an electronic indie-duo who has latest played live at the 10th anniversary party of the Monika label at Volksbühne, Berlin, in 2007. Chica Paula has already released a remix for Donna Regina (Karaoke Kalk artists themselves) on Kalk Pets 13 and a solo 12″ on Kalk Pets is soon to appear…

PASS THE FLAME - CTM & MUTEK 10th ANNIVERSARY PARTY

transmediale_logo_square.jpg

Before wrapping up, one more big celebration is in order: as partners and allies for many years, CTM and the Montréal Mutek Festival, which will also celebrate its 10th anniversary in May 2009, invite everyone to a joint after-hour birthday party. And where could be better than Berlin’s centre of extended clubbing, the Berghain Panorama Bar.

The fitting sound for it comes from artists who are connected by the two festivals and one of the central ideas of their cooperation – the promotion of the musical exchange between Montréal, Berlin, Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Mexico City and other places in South America. On the decks: Vincent Lemieux, Mutek co-organiser and operator of the label Musique Risquée, and the Argentinian born Ernesto Ferreyra, also know from his collaboration with Guillaume and the Coutu-Dumonts as Chic Miniature. In addition, a live set by Cynosure founder Mike Shannon and, as a special treat on top, a joint appearance by Panorama Bar resident Cassy with Tobias. Behind it is none other than Tobias Freund aka Pink Elln, a sound perfectionist in a class of his own and, along with Dandy Jack and Jorge Gonzales, member of the German-Chilean formation Sieg Über die Sonne.

Since their first project together for club transmediale 2002 – a club night with Akufen, Pole, Deadbeat, Tim Hecker and others – Mutek and CTM have solidified their cooperation and friendship through regular activities and reciprocal support. This has included organising the spectacular Narod Niki show – the Laptop-Allstar-Group around Ricardo Villalobos and Ritchie Hawtin – at the Berlin Volksbühne in 2004, reciprocally organising program content for their festivals, and working together within the framework of I.C.A.S. – International Cities of Advanced Sound, a network for experimental music festivals that is currently being developed.

Like this afternoon’s host Berghain/ Panorama Bar, Mutek and CTM feel indebted to the original community spirit of electronic club culture, with the combination of hedonistic free spirit, pleasure in experimentation and willingness to take risks. All three share an interest in uncompromising musical quality, artistic crossover and aesthetic consistency. Through their activities over the years, each of them has become an important nodal point in the production and presentation of their specific network and community.

GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS

News:

mship014_large.jpg

Artist: Catz ‘n Dogz
Title: Sunset In The East Feat. DOP
Cat-N°: MSHIP014
Format: Vinyl

The fourth and final installment in the Catz ‘n Dogz vinyl series has saved the best for last. Sunset in the East is an epic opus, gradually unfolding in a cascade of warm toms, luxuriant ride cymbals, and assured sax stabs from their talented guests from dOP. Each new phrase ushers a fresh set of sonic delights into the frame, peaking with exultant proclamations from the saxophones. On the flip side, the white-hot Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts remix distills the track into the purest, most primal house music imaginable. His arrangement deftly remolds the sax sections to suit the track’s grand progression, gloriously blurring the lines between percussion and instrumentation.

Adam Marshall

- New Kanada - Man and Nature EP (feat. remixes from The Mole & Miss Fitz)

nk13_label.jpg

Two stunning remixes of the long sought after “Man and Nature” track by Mood Edit, and one killer re-edit of the original.
Deep, tracky house music for tech heads with a heart…
On the A-side, The Mole (Wagon Repair, MUTEK) distills the essence of the track into a pumping, dubbed-out mixing tool
with his signature soul and some serious kicks. You can hear the analogue signal sizzling through this one… big systems beware.
On the B-side, Adam Marshall re-edits the thrills and chills of the original mix into a serious house affair - sitting somewehere between Kerri Chandler, Agnés and Robert Hood. Minimal madness and baddass basslines.
And rounding out the EP with her remix is Berlin’s Miss Fitz (Raum, Contexterior) - who delivers an old-school, deep house jack track. Evoking early Dance Mania and Bobby Konders…

Sonja Moonear

- Neo Pren - Sonja Moonear’s remix on pop-3 aka. TK.KIM EP

cover_short_neo_017.jpg

Some house, some techno, some minimal and some electronica go bumping, pumping and crackling nicely, deepy creepy basses make you feel like you experience a pocket-earthquake, and the fact that TK.KIM does not only tweak and twiddle old synths but also speak with her sweet voice makes it all even nicer. The three ladies behind the turntables (even though Akiko and Kim are actually not DJs) offer you unusual, beautiful and dancy stuff waiting to sneak into your ears and bodies. Be ready, be open!

The Mole

- Lee Jones, Soon Ep (Mole’s MMD Remix) - Aus

leejones_soonep.jpg

‘Soon (Moles MMD Remix)’: Woah! The Mole takes us into his hole….and it’s a deep one at that. He cuts up the vocals and uses fragments for percussive hits and layers for melodic textures. A truly hypnotic excursion that is all about the wickedly infectious groove that will not let you go..… ‘The Secret’: Reminiscent of early Isolee with discordant melodies combining with a deliciously soulful lead line. The groove is stripped back giving the melodies a feeling of space and power. ‘MDMAzing’: We think the title says it all. Don’t take it too seriously, it’s supposed to make you smile.

Jeremy Caulfield (Dumb Unit): “ The Mole’s mix is hot hot hot !! Hot Damn ! Hot Butter ! Hot Nuts ! Hot Wax ! Hot Pants ! ..”

Josh Wink (ovum): “ wow. Nice one! Both the original and the Mole remix are great! I like the minimal Deepness of the original, and Mole takes it to a hypnotic level. Dope!”

Mike Shannon (Cynosure, Wagon Repair): “I’m into all of the tracks on this one! Some great work from Lee and a slick remix from the Mole. Ace! ”

Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts is a studied percussionist and one of the hottest producers in the scene of modern house music. With L’éte des indiens he delivers an interpretation of contemporary grooves, that are commited to the basic elements of quality music. Focussing on that, the track Halleluyah Yeah takes you on a percussive journey being followed by the dance floor bomb Le Tigre on the flip side.

Deadbeat

- Wagon Repair, Roots and Wire LP

2809495461_88631c5006.jpg

Deadbeat is Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquée, Scape, and Spectral to name but a few. His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry’s leading publications, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world’s most respected festivals and clubs, including Barcelona’s Sonar, Berlin’s Transmediale, and Montreal’s Mutek alongside Panorama Bar, fabric and the like. His eagerly anticipated new album sees him continue his relationship with kindred spirits Wagon Repair in his own inimitable techno/dub/dancehall/house style. Those familiar with Deadbeat’s last album, which felt much more a collection of tracks, will be immediately struck by Roots and Wire’s larger cohesive narrative arc after thex first listen. The album is aesthetically informed by his longterm collaborative friendship with Robert Henke (monolake), the creative relationship with Wagon Repair, the close proximity of his fellow artists in Berlin and the opportunity to collaborate with Paul St Hilaire (Tikiman).
